From clay to table: how our stoneware is made

From sketch to foot ring: how a Kilnwright dinner plate is thrown, trimmed, glazed and fired.
Every Kilnwright piece begins as a ball of stoneware clay and a pencil sketch. In this post we walk through our studio process — wedging, throwing, trimming, bisque firing, glazing and the final firing — and show how a dinner plate earns its foot ring.
We fire to cone 6 for everyday durability, and every glaze we use is food-safe and lead-free. Small variations in colour and texture are the signature of a handmade piece, not a flaw.
